SPAM STATISTICS: TREND 2004 - 2005
UPDATE JUNE 2005:
The spam volume decreased pretty much again. See the updated graphs below.
UPDATE MAY 2005:
The spam volume increased dramatically again in May 2005. See the updated graphs below.
Well, the good news is, that the global SPAM volume seems to be decreasing due better filters and other ANTI-SPAM measures,
but the bad news is that there is still plenty of SPAM delivered each second. I've conducted a personal survey with some different
honeypots (in this case, honeypots are email addresses carelessly used in maillists and posted in forums etc., so that spammers
could harvest them easily).
All honeypot emails are in use for more than 3 years now and in order to get better statistics, the careless use of the email
addresses was stopped at the beginning of 2004.
The graphs are normalized to 100%. That means the max SPAM volume per day or month is
taken as 100% and all other values are calculated with that day/month as reference.

While the amount was increasing constantly from January 2004 to August 2004, it was rather equal from August to October 2004,
then suddenly increased in November 2004, and is decreasing again since January 2005.
Interpretation of the unusual peaks in November and January 2004 is difficult, since the SPAM received depends on many variables, but the
continously decreasing amount in 2005 is most likely due the new and hard laws against spammers.
The dramatic increase in May 2005 remains mysterious, but the statistics for June 2005 show that things, well, errr "normalize" again
- let's see how things develop in July 2005.
