AMD64 AMD Athlon 64 - Versions and Coolers

Currently there are 3 different CPU cores for the AMD Athlon 64:
Newcastle, Clawhammer and the new Winchester core

As far as I've heard the Clawhammer (Socket 754) is already obsolete, since it's almost not available anymore (February 2005). The Newcastle core is the current state of the art processor for the Socket 754 and the Winchester + Clawhammer, manufactured with the new 90nm process, are the Socket 939 versions.
Most motherboards for the new socket 939 do not have AGP anymore, so if you want to reuse your current graphics card, you'd want to go with a Socket 754. Motherboard for the 754 still have AGP, but no PCI-Express bus slots.

If you want to build a brand new system anyway, I'd go for a Socket 939 with PCI Express. There will be normal PCI cards at least for the next 2-3 years, so going without PCI express should be fine too.

Coolers (heatsink + fan) for the AMD64:

There are plenty of choices, but according to tests these are some recommended heatsinks + fan:

Thermaltake Venus 12:
  • Very good cooling capacity
  • 21 dBA at 2000 RPM to 48 dBA at 5500 RPM
  • 3 modes: full fan speed; adjustable with poti; thermal sensor
  • Maybe a bit loud at 5500 RPM
Scythe Samurai CPU Cooler:
  • Very good cooling capacity
  • 16dBA at 1300 RPM to 37dBA at 3400 RPM
  • Adjustable speed
Noiseblocker Badboy AMD Supersilent:
  • Good cooling capacity
  • 17 dbA at 1600 RPM to 32 dbA at 3200 RPM
  • Adjustable speed
Zalman CNPS 7000A CU 3200:
  • Good cooling capacity
  • 20 dbA at 1350 RPM to 25 dbA at 2400 RPM
  • Adjustable speed
Thermaltake Silent Booster K8:
  • Good cooling capacity
  • 21 dbA at 2450 RPM
  • Good cooling, while being very silent; good price/value
Thermaltake TR2-M6 Silencer:
  • Sufficient low noise cooling
  • 21 dbA at 2500 RPM
  • Only for the price-conscious user
