Thunderbird address book files (abook.mab file) could not be read - corrupt address book
After the Thunderbird lost mails fiasco, I had another issue
today, where the address book (abook.mab) suddenly became corrupted and was unreadable.
One of your address book files (abook.mab file) could not be read.
A new abook.mab file will be created and a backup of the old file,
called abook.map.bak, will be created in the same directory.
Well, at least the mozilla guys were thinking and the old "unreadable" address book is not deleted, but
a backup copy is saved with the name "abook.mab.bak".
In my case I was able to repair the abook.mab file manually.
If you look at the bottom section of the address book file, you will see that there are some "tags"
opening and closing, e.g.:
@$${12EB{@
[... stuff ...]
@$$}12EB}@
In my case, the end of the file looked like this:
@$${1557{@
<(2CE2=460e82f0)>[-581:^80(^83^1097)(^84^1098)(^E6=)(^E7=)(^85^1099)
(^86=)(^87^1A9C)(^88^1A9C)(^89=)(^B4=)(^B5=)(^8A=0)(^8B=)(^8C=)
(^8D=)(^8E=)(^8F=)(^B6=)(^B7=
@$${155D{@
@$$}155D}@
It is obvious that the @$${1557{@ tag is not closed and @$${155D{@ doesn't contain any data.
So I deleted this corrupt section, and it worked again :-)
