GIMP Image/Photo Crossfade with Layer Mask and Gradient

Quick tutorial: In order to cross-fade 2 images/photos in GIMP follow these steps:

We have our 2 source images:
Image #1 Image #2


Open both in GIMP, select image #1, Menu -> Select -> All, copy the image.
Now select image #2 and paste image #1 into it



Now use "Layers menu -> New layer ..." to make a layer out of the floating selection (pasted layer).



* In the layers menu, select "Add layer mask" (White - full opacity)
* Select the gradient tool, foreground color black and background color white, Gradient: FG to BG
* Draw gradient in image #2




The result image looks like this:
