ESA's Volker Liebig announcing that there is no signal from Cryosat

Emergency press conference with the announcement that there went something wrong and investigations will be started immediately

After all, Cryosat is lost - the second stage of the russian Rockot launcher did not seperate. Actually the command for the second stage to finish burning was never transmitted to the rocket, so it burnt until the end and the subsequent command for separation was never executed. So the empty second stage, the full third stage along with the Cryosat satellite were on a ballistic trajectory from Plesetsk, over the north pole until it impacted in the Lincoln sea north of Greenland.

Scientists and project members at ESA immeditely started to talk about a possible Cryosat 2 mission.
