ARTEMIA SALINA - SALINA DI CERVIA - Ancora una volta

ARTEMIA SALINA - SALINA DI CERVIA

While in Italy, I visited the Saline of Cervia (solar salt work) again in 2006.
Many thanks to Valerio, Bruno, Valentina, Nicola et al. (in order of appearance), who showed me once again the Saline salt work and the Artemia Salina :-)

Billions of Artemia eggs in one pond of the saline salt work of Cervia

Another view of the billion Artemia eggs

Valerio is checking the salinity of the pond

The place where I checked the nitrate, ammonia and oxygen content of the pond. The red color of the water is due the red Dunaliella algae, which is the prime food for Artemia there.

Bruno is our guide thru the cruise in the Salina di Cervia

We land on the shore of some pond ...

... and after a short walk we reach on of the crystallation ponds, where Bruno is grasping some salt crystals

This is the place where I took a bottle full of Artemia parthenogenetica on 15-AUG-2006.

Now we're cruising back to the Centro Visite of the Salina di Cervia.

Some low bridge is approaching...

... and we have to duck and cover.

Bruno, Valentina, Captain, Valerio, Guide#2 (Come ti chiami? ;-)

Back in Cervia on 28-AUG-2006, Nicola is teaching us the basics of the saline.

Nicola is showing us Salicornia, a plant which is growing in the saline and on mediterranean shores and can be cooked and eaten like spinach.

Being at the same spot as Bruno showed us 2 weeks ago, Nicola is explaining the solar salt work.

The shore of one crystallation pond, showing many bird feathers (bottom), red water (red Dunaliella algae) and much crystallized salt in between.

Nicola and visitors in the crystallation pond.

The Artemia I brought from Cervia on 28-AUG-2006 (which are still living in my aquarium as of 04-OCT-2006)
