ARTEMIA SALINA - GREAT SALT LAKE

  • The 4th largest terminal lake (no outlet) in the world
  • A remnant of Lake Bonneville, a prehistoric freshwater lake that was 10 times larger than GSL
  • About 75 miles long, and 28 miles wide, and covers 1,700 square miles
  • Has a maximum depth of about 35 feet
  • Typically 3 to 5 times saltier than the ocean
  • Fish free, the largest aquatic critters are brine shrimp (our Artemia Salina) and brine flies

SALT LAKE CITY AIR TEMPERATURE

The surface temperature of the Great Salt Lake is basically equal to the average temperature in the months. Brine (salt-water) has a much lower freezing point than freshwater - ocean sea water (~3-4% salinity) freezes at 29F (-2C) - fully saturated brine (no more salt can be dissolved) has a freezing point of -6F (-21C). Our Salt Lake (south arm) has a salinity of 3-5 times of ocean salinity. The north part of the Salt Lake has a salinity of currently 28% and is uninhabitable for Artemia.
